Travel to Herculaneum and Visit Pompeii

In accordance with Greek mythology, Herculaneum, named after Hercules, is said to have been founded by the legendary figure himself. Unlike Pompeii, which was engulfed in volcanic ash, Herculaneum met a different fate when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD-it was buried in mud. The mud solidified over time, uniquely preserving the site in an almost pristine condition.

Upon meeting your local representative for your Naples shore excursion, you will depart from the pier and head to Pompeii. Once a thriving port and a hub of wealth and politics, this city met an abrupt fate when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, burying it under 30 feet of volcanic ash and cinder. Today, Pompeii stands as one of the most renowned archaeological sites globally. At the height of its prosperity, Pompeii was inhabited by 20,000 people, and a tragic chapter unfolded when it's thought that 2,000 of them met instantaneous demise as volcanic ash descended upon the city. In the afternoon, you'll journey to Herculaneum, founded in the 4th century B.C., whose architecture mirrors that of Naples' historic city center. Although smaller than Pompeii, Herculaneum possesses a distinct character. Due to an earthquake in 63 AD, many affluent residents had already departed before the subsequent eruption, sparing Herculaneum from the eerie body casts found in Pompeii. Preserved in mud, the opulent homes showcase remarkable preservation, with examples like the vibrant mosaic at Casa del Nettuno de Anfitrite retaining intense color. The deities gracing private baths and fountains come to life in vivid scenes from an ancient era. Notable highlights include the opulent lifestyles depicted in paintings and furnishings at the two-story House of the Deer. Following your exploration, you will return along the peninsula to Naples.
