Private Highlights of Antigua

Take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to book this private tour option and experience the best preserved colonial city in Latin America. Formerly the colonial Spanish capital of Central America, Antigua today is a UNESCO World Heritage Center Site as well as a must visit destination for anyone traveling to Guatemala.

People come from around the world to enjoy the natural beauty and historic monuments this area has to offer. The Spanish Colonial style permeates every part of the town; homes, churches, squares, parks and ruins. You are surrounded everywhere by authentic local traditions and folklore. Antigua is a charming city and vivid in color, where you can see a variety of handmade products that honor the traditions of generations of artisans.

You will be met at the cruise pier where you will be transferred in comfort to Antigua, Guatemala. Along with your personal guide you will begin your day with the first attraction and visit the ruins of Santo Domingo Convent. This monastery was edified in 1529 and today some of its post-earthquake remains have been converted into a hotel.

Continue to the Jade Factory and Museum where you will learn about the various types of jade, how this mineral is mined and the process of how the stones are fashioned into beautiful jewelry. Be sure to touch the jade rock formation in the middle of the showroom for good luck!

Next you will visit the surroundings of the Cathedral Church of San Jose, a beautiful Roman Catholic church in Antigua. The original church was built around 1541 but suffered damage due to several earthquakes throughout its history. The first church building was demolished in 1669 and the cathedral was rebuilt and consecrated in 1680.

Travel next to a peaceful and beautiful park where you will take a leisurely stroll to find the large fountain. Circular walkways and inviting benches along with the friendly yet bustling activity of locals alike await you on this experience.

Explore one of the distinguishable landmarks in Antigua Guatemala, Santa Catalina Arch. Built in the 17th century, originally it was connected to the convent of Santa Catalina, allowing the cloistered nuns to pass from one building to the other without going out on the street.

Finally, you will arrive outside the 17th century Church of La Merced with its twin bell towers and graceful yellow and white facade.

After a full day of discovery, you will then return to Puerto Quetzal and the pier area and your ship.
