Today unfolds with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Guimaraes, regarded as the birthplace of Portugal and renowned for its well-preserved medieval buildings and national monuments. An important transport junction, this is where barrels of wine were boarded onto traditional rabelos bound for Gaia in the 18th century, where the wine was aged in local lodges.
