Sineus was the brother of Rurik and sailed with him from Scandinavia to Kyiv. According to the 12th-century Primary Chronicle, Sineus settled in Beloozero, now called Belozersk, where he secured these lands for the growing Kyivan Rus empire. One of Russia's oldest towns, Beloozero has been called the "portal to Russia's northern waterways."
